Compression used to reduced a file in storage size. This is used to reduce the amount of storage used on a storage drive so that there is more space for other files. Compression is also used to make online uploads or downloads much faster. File type (e.g. JPEG, PNG), resolution (e.g. 1280 x 720) and colour depth (4 bit, 8 bit, 32 bit) can be changed to allow an image to be compressed and take up less storage space.
When you press "save as" on a piece of software like Photoshop, you can change the file type of the image. By changing the file type, you are also changing the quality of the image as different file types are compressed more than others. By saving an image as .JPEG, it is compressed using lossy compression.

Lossy compression is a certain type of compression that specifically reduces the size of the file by removing unnecessary data. This is normally used for files such as audio and video as it isn't as noticeable, having an advantage as it allows reduction of file size with only a small decrease in quality.

A compressed file is much better than an uncompressed file as a compressed file requires a much smaller amount of storage space. In some instances, file sizes can be reduced by up to 60-70%. In addition, a compressed file also moves more quickly over a computer network, whether this is the school LAN or the internet. Compression is also required sometimes when we want to send a file as an attachment through an email, sometimes the email may not send the file as the size is more than it takes. Therefore, you will need to compress the file so that the file size is small enough to send as an attachment through email. However, compression may lead to the loss of some data.

The reasons many use file compression is because it makes file backup more efficient, makes uploading files to a web page easier and lastly makes downloading and opening files from a web page easier as they are compressed

Lossless is a type of compression that allows the size of a file to be compressed while the quality of the file is not tampered in any way. This way of compression involves mainly around images, however can be used for other files such as mp3. As lossy permanently removes data during compression, lossless compressed data can be restored to its original format with nothing removed.
