I learned that all educators gain their beliefs about what it means to be a teacher from watching the teachers they have had and from their own values (pg. 1). I realized that the educators I have had, have greatly influenced my idea of what being a teacher is and means. I have valued education and educators since I was little, because that is what my parents have taught me.

Some believe it is to help students, others believe it is to help students grow into good people, and others believe schools are just there to simply teach (pg. 2). This made me realize that I believe that schools have many different purposes. I believe the purpose of school is to help students learn life skills and feel loved and welcomed.

I learned that educators have different views about what knowledge is valuable and think differently about how students learn (pg. 3). I learned that some educators believe that only they can teach students, while others believe students and teachers can work together to teach each other (pg. 3). This made me realize that I believe that students and teachers working together is the best way to help students learn. I believe that teachers can also learn a lot from students and when they let students discuss their ideas, they allow other students to learn from each other’s views and experiences.

I also learned that as an educator, it can be hard to accept that your beliefs are wrong and need to be changed (pg 7). I realizeed that I do not want to have beliefs that are going to make my students fail. When I do have students that fail, I am going to take note of it to make sure it is not my beliefs holding them back. I also will work hard to make sure that I am open minded to change and do not try to keep beliefs that are negatively affecting my students.

According to Frank McCourt, he mentions how educators are important to society. He first states that children are the most important thing to our country because they are our future. In addition, people look down on educators because they are not educated, poorly developed, or not getting paid enough. People are not treating the educators respectfully which is causing educators to not help out the students. (pg. 14). In my opinion, I will do whatever I can help out my students. I am someone who cares and will want my students to reach for great things in the future. No matter if I am not treated respectfully, I want to make a difference in the student's life.

According to Alex White, he believes that Urban Academy schools have made the biggest difference than regular schools. He first states that it was a place where students and educators were interacting in a collaborative way. Secondly, Alex states that students are assigned to help the office, such as answering the phone, filing paper, and making photo copies, and even helping around the school. Alex believes that this is a very active place where students are respected and treated good (pg. 15). I think this a great way to students involved at the school and also get work experience at such a young age.

As a future educator, there are many ways on how we can get advice from other teachers about improving our education skills. According to Frank McCourt, he got advice about education from two different types of groups, the veteran teachers and the younger educators. The veteran teachers mentioned that when you are teaching you are the boss of the classroom. You need to be in charge and tell them what they need to do. If they do not listen, there will be consequences. On the other hand, the younger educators mentioned that the students are people and you have to meet their felt needs (pg. 13). I think this is so inspiring to hear two completely different opinions about education. If I had to choose one side, it would have to be from the veteran teachers. Since they have more experience working with kids, I believe that their advice will be more beneficial.

According to Alex White, I believe he provided a very solid description of how he ensures that all students are on track. I appreciate the notion of having a seminar with his students rather than continuing to lecture them (pg. 16). This is an excellent strategy because students may raise their hands if something appears to be confused, and we can all discuss it as a class. Furthermore, students may feel more comfortable to discuss the issue with one another, which allows them to use their critical thinking abilities.

He mentioned that when he used to live in Ireland, the teachers used to not treat him very nicely and would hit him with a stick (pg. 12). According to Alex White, he says that in Urban Academy Schools, the staff meets once or twice a week to discuss how the teachers are running the classroom and how the curriculum is going. This will determine if the staff is meeting their goals and their advice is effective (pg. 16). As a future educator, this reminds me of the PLC meetings that take place once a week. This may cause students to feel neglected or upset about not connecting with the teacher. This will cause them to do poorly in school and assume that their teacher doesn't care about them I think the teacher should treat every student the same. If the teacher has any concerns about their students, then they should definably let the students know

Hi Lucina,

I was very intrigued, after reading your post, by the way in which past educators can influence one's beliefs regarding what it means to be a teacher. In elementary school, I was lucky enough to have teachers that cared about me. I valued the time they took out of their busy day to help me out when needed and provided me with the best education. Since I was so young, they influenced my idea of what a teacher is and what it means to make a difference in the students life.
