Amilcar Cabral was the leader of a group called the PAIGC, which fought for independence in Guinea-Bissau. He formed the group in 1956 to gain independence from Portugal. Antonio de Spinola was the leader of Portugal at the time.

PAIGC Makes Gains

PAIGC Soldiers initially gained control of many different areas from 1963-1967. They did so very slowly, but they were still able to take territory from Portugal.

Portugal Invades

In 1970, Portugal launched an invasion of Guinea-Bissau. This was called Operation Green Sea. This was largely a failure and they did not have much success. They were led by Antonio de Spinola

Assassination of Amilcar Cabral

Amilcar Cabral was killed in January of 1973. He was killed by fellow PAIGC members in a city called Conakry. This led to Guinea-Bissau becoming much more aggressive in their attacks.

The Portuguese Withdraw

In 1974, Portugal left Guinea-Bissau. 11 years of armed conflict was over and Guinea-Bissau was finally independent from Portugal. Independence was declared in Madina do Boe. This was an important cause for the people of Guinea-Bissau because they were tired of being ruled by Portugal and wanted to make decisions for themselves so they could have a better life.
