The loss of your birth name plays a large role in identity issues in Spirited Away (2001). when you lose your name (or it gets taken from you) you lose your identity and forget who you are as a person. the idea is to find yourself and your identity.

There is a particular focus on names in Spirited Away. The mysterious land that Chihiro finds herself in forces her to abandon her old name, possibly as an analogy for not letting people be themselves, and Haku has some sort of spell broken on him when Chihiro remembers his name. This of course connects to a topic of identity and the importance of it, as evidence by the fact that the most monstrous character is No-Face, someone who literally has no identity.

In the beginning of the film, Spirited Away (2001), Chihiro's parents overindulge in a feast not meant for them. They then are transformed into pigs. This is a common symbol in film and media for the way individuals behave in a capitalist society. They indulge like pigs and continue to eat and consume with no regard for moderation. Similarly to how people will just continue to buy and consume aimlessly.

This has been confirmed to be false by the creator, Hayao Miyazaki, but Death of the Author and all that. The removal of one's names, the harsh control and everpresent eyes of the witch, No-Face offer of gold and Chihiro's refusal of it, removal of individuality, etc, all contribute to the interpretation. I don't subscribe to it myself, but it's out there.

In the beginning of Spirited Away (2001), a wind pushes the family towards the entryway to the alternate universe.
Capitalism has the ability to strip people of their identity. The character of no face is all consuming as he goes on a rampage eating everything in his sight. His actions paired with the fact that he has not been given a face or real name exemplifies how capitalism strips people of their individuality so that they may continue to consume mold themselves into a person that is an amalgamation of every desire.

However, when he offers Chihiro the money, she simply says she doesn’t want it, and becomes the only person who can stop him from destroying the bathhouse.
The film begins with Chihiro having to accept her new reality of moving to a new school/ starting a new chapter. This theme of transition is seen a lot within most coming-of-age films. Throughout the film, Sen's character must make numerous decisions, experience new changes, and undergo uncomfortable situations. All of which leads to the development of a matured sense of character. By the end of the film, you can visually see a transformation in Sen(even highlighted through the change in name).
