Specifically in areas such as my phone bill and sorority dues. My parents slowly shifted bigger responsibilities over to me while I was in high school so I wasn't shocked coming into college, having all of these new bills, payments, etc. I am definitely worried about how I am going to pay for graduate school. I have been blessed through scholarship to not take out loans in my first (almost) 3 years pf college. However graduate programs are not as simple to apply for scholarships. That is my biggest financial worry. I live on campus right now which means my scholarship covers it. I remember one in specific was inhalers, breathing machines, and albuteral treatments. As someone who suffers with chronic and severe asthma, the sudden increase in price, as well as the drop in availability of these essential medications/treatments, was terrifying. I also remember every store being sold out of almost every non-perishable food. Water, canned goods, packaged chips, anything that could stay edible without the need for a fridge or freezer was gone. On the second floor of the student health clinic, there is a counseling center. It works Monday-Friday 8-4:30 I believe. I have been at UCA since Fall of 2018, struggling to find a counselor that didn't break the bank. The UCA health clinic will allow you up o 10 visits a semester, and will give you free 30-minute sessions. Of we could only gain a littler perspective, maybe we would have more compassion for others. We we only had a glimpse into the life of others, the struggles they faces, the trials they endure, then maybe we would show love, forgiveness, kindness, or offer a helping hand. We, as humans are so quick to think about how situations inconvenience us. When a baby is crying on an airplane, our immediate reaction is frustration as we scoff, and cover our ears while we try to fall back to sleep. When walking through a grocery store a child throws a tantrum in front of your cart, and our knee-jerk reaction is to shoot a dirty look at the mother, insinuating she should control her kids better. When a car drives slow in "the fast lane" we honk our horn, ride their bumper, and swerve around them to avoid inconveniencing ourselves. If we only knew that the mother on the airplane is a single mom, flying home to visit family for the first time. If we could only see that the child in the supermarket has autism and is unable to effectively communicate how she feels. If only we would take a look in the car next to us on the highway to see an old man, with his wife in the front seat, trying to drive safely to ensure they both make it home. In the 6th grade, I had a teacher look at our class and say "The day that my work becomes a job is the day I pack up and leave." This man wasn't concerned with money (if he was, I doubt education likely would've been his top pick.) He loved teaching young kids. His passion was influencing tomorrow's leaders. I want my work, my 9-5 to be so much more than just a paycheck, I am walking into a career field that is already quite under-paid. I have no choice but to love what I do, because money is never going to be a "wow" factor for my career. A specific example I can think of is the mask shortage. At the beginning stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were required to wear N-95 masks for (basically) as long as we could.
