What I took away from project two is that there are so many ways to fulfill an artifact's purpose. Even throughout wildly different genres and contexts, rhetorical appeals always come up. Even academic papers, which usually we aren't thinking about rhetorically utilize logos and ethos in order to fulfill their purpose (often to inform). Now that I'm looking for it, it seems like everyday someone or something is trying to appeal to me using rhetorical devices (in ads, videos, my friends, etc.).

Genre: TikTok
Medium: video
Rhetor: @mndiaye_97
Genre Conventions: 60 seconds (or less) per video, hashtag use, uses a "sound" to play music over the video
Constraints: Can only be up to a minute long, and only reaches as many followers as a rhetor has (can end up on a For You page but is less likely with smaller creators).
Purpose: To inform the audience about a creepy deep-sea creature, the big fin squid. The entire video is dedicated to the rhetor telling the audience facts about the creature and what scientists currently know about it.
Exigence: This account is known for videos like this where the rhetor @mndiaye_97 introduces and talks about different interesting creatures on Earth, this video is one of many and was likely a request from one of his followers.
Audience: The audience for this TikTok is @mndiaye_97's followers, and anyone who has a For You page that would welcome content about deep-sea creatures (i.e. anyone that is following national geographic or cryptid accounts) because the algorithm will likely show them this based on their likes.
Rhetorical Appeals: The rhetor, @mndiaye_97, uses familiar slang language and terms in order inform young people (who consist of the majority of TikTok's user base) about the big fin squid. He uses words like, "T-pose", "slenderman", "violation" in order to relate the topic more to his audience of younger people. He also uses visual appeals in the form of real footage of this creature in order to both inform the audience about it, as well as demonstrate why he is "freaked out" by it. Throughout the video, he shows several videos taken by scientists of the squid from different angles, and the dark lighting coupled with the strange way the creature looks makes it seem very creepy, but it also gives a visual representation of it so that the audience can know what a big fin squid looks like.

Overall I think @mndiaye_97 effectively uses this TikTok to inform his audience (follows, young people, fyp) about the big fin squid and everything we currently know about it. Even with a time constraint, he fits a lot of information about the squid in 60 seconds.
