They could also except fiefs (land) from several lords and not just one at one time. Knights were expected to wear suits of armor and ride on horse back in battle for extra protection. They owned no land but were able to live and work on manors owned by nobles or knights. Their jobs were to grow and harvest vegetables and crops that they grew in gardens near their homes. Peasants were expected to live and stay on the manor for the rest of their lives. With population increasing because of the new farming technology, more and more people left their manors life to live in the town. At this same time trade started to increase in towns because people learned that you can trade food or other goods for money.
