He was educated in England and then joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, which was then a British colony. In 1927, he resigned and decided to become a writer. He moved to Paris in 1928, where his lack of success as a writer forced him into a series of menial jobs. In his first book, 'Down and Out in Paris and London,' published in 1933, he described his experiences. He adopted the name George Orwell shortly before the book's publication. His first novel, 'Burmese Days,' was published in 1934.
