The movie kicks off with a chilling point, where a young woman goes out swimming late at night. She is then violently pulled underwater and her partial remains are found the next day. The body is sent to a medical examiner where they rule it to be a shark attack. Since the main police chief Martin Brody was first on the scene, he then makes the decision to close all beaches in the area.

This decision is overruled by the mayor and he says it will ruin their summer economy. The coroner then discusses with the mayor and says that it wasn't a shark attack but merely a boating accident. This statement does not go down well with the chief but he knows that his argument will not change this conclusion. Coincidentally, another brutal shark attack occurs and the mayor is forced into closing the beaches and putting a bounty on the sharks head.

This then resulted in a mass frenzy of amateur fisherman going out to sea, eager to catch there handsome prize. A local professional fisherman says he will catch the beast for $10,000 dollars. The chief then consults a oceanographer, who also examines the body of the second victim. The local fisherman then return proclaiming that they "have caught the shark". The Oceanographer disagrees and says that the shark that attacked the two people made massive bite marks, ones that wouldn't have been made by a Tiger shark.

He backs this up when he cuts up the shark's stomach and he finds no human body parts or remains. The beaches then stay open, even when propositions are put up to close them. A celebration then takes place on one of the beaches where coincidentally a shark attack takes place, making the mayor to close and hire the professional fisherman. The chief, oceanographer and pro fisherman go out to take down the beast.

They use experiments to "fish out" the shark (see what I did there). They find the shark and engage in an intriguing game of cat and mouse. This then leads to the astonishment and the realisation that there fairly massive boat, is not big enough. The Oceanographer then goes underwater in one of those cages. The massive shark breaks him out of it and he then swims away. The shark makes the boat lean back and he then eats Quint. The shark eats an oxygen tank and the chief realizes this. With rifle in hand he shoots the tank and it then explodes, obliterating the shark. The oceanographer emerges and finds the chief.
