Lens: Psychoanalytical Criticism
Connection: Holden is always thinking about the ducks and when they will move to a different place and how they will get there. This brings up the fact that Holden has a fear of change. He is always very worried about anything in his life changing without him having to know every little detail that occurs.
Character Trait: Anxious

Lens: Psychoanalytical Criticism
Connection: Holden seems to be all bark and no bite. Meaning he will talk and say all these things that he is going to do, but never actually does it. When sunny the prostitute came up to his hotel room, he seemed as though he was ready to go through with whatever she wanted. Holden ended up getting into his head to much and backing down. He looked at every little detail while he was talking to Sunny and realized how bad of an idea this all was. Holden pretends that he is so old and mature and is ready for whatever life throws at him, when really he is still a child on the inside.
Character Trait: adolescent

Lens: Psychoanalytical Criticism
Connection: Holden had a weird feeling of respect for James Castle when he died. This was because James committed suicide by jumping out of his window after refusing to submit to a group of bullies who locked James and themselves with in James's room and threatened him. He didn't know James very well but he did know him. This caused a lot of trauma on Holden that he didn't know how to deal with and just let it build up.
Character Trait: traumatic

Lens: Psychoanalytical Criticism
Connection: When Holden brought Phoebe to the carousel he was reminiscing about his childhood. Holden does everything in his power to protect his own innocence. He may act very mature and act a lot older than his actual age but in reality all the end decisions that he makes lead to the protection of his innocence. When they got to the carousel Holden finally accepted the path of "adulthood," when he decided not to go on the ride. He finally comes to terms with himself.
Character Trait: Innocent

Holden's Hunting Hat

Lens: Psychoanalytical Criticism
Connection: This picture represents comfort and familiarity. Every time Holden gets uncomfortable or needs to have the feeling of home he puts his hunting hat on. He uses it as a way to protect himself from what society has to throw at him. When he gave his hat to Phoebe to wear, it showed the trust that he had for her and how he really truly cares about Phoebe and her well being. The author uses the hat to symbolize the comfort that it brings to Holden. So when he showed the trust in Phoebe it seemed like a big step for him because of how little he seems to trust people.
Character Trait: Vulnerable

Mr. Antolini

Lens: Psychoanalytical Criticism
Connection: Mr. Antolini was someone in Holden's life that he seemed to be able to trust fully. He was able to talk to him about his life and Mr. Antolini would give him his best advice. When Holden was at a pretty low point he called up Mr. Antolini and asked to spend the night. They talked for a while, Holden fell asleep and woke up to Mr. Antolini stroking his head. Holden felt as though Mr. Antolini was trying to make a pass on him so he left. This event follows along with Holden's idea of phonies and how everyone is fake. Holden felt like he could trust Mr. Antolini then what he did disgusted Holden and made him question everything. He realized he now had distrust in Mr. Antolini and now it is one less person he is comfortable around.
Character Trait: Discouraged
