The song is about the speaker, suggested to be a person of color (Mitski, the poet, is a Japanese-American), talking to the audience, who is suggested to be White/more privileged than the speaker. She talks about their differences, talking about how the audience doesn't know the things the speaker has to go through as someone with lesser privilege ("You're the sun, you've never seen the night, but you hear its song from the morning birds... but awake at night, I'll be singing to the birds.") The conflict starts with the lines "Your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me, but I do, I think that I do." There are multiple difference between how White parents raise their children and how POC raise their children. The conflict is then ended with the ending lines, "Your mother wouldn't approve of how my mother raised me, but I do, I finally do." This shows the speaker coming to terms with her differences with more privileged people compared to her.

As a black woman living in America, I know the lack of privilege I have compared to, say, rich people or white people (or both!). Another thing, I've never really been comfortable with how my own mother raised me, and based on my conversations with other people (specifically white people), no one else likes how my mom raised me either. But I think, over time, I've come to terms with how my mom raised me, despite other peoples opinions. It doesn't mean I liked it, but I've come to terms with it certainly.
