Types of special needs learners I observed.

I observed an adapted English class for special needs learners. These were freshman and repeat sophomores and juniors in this specific class. All but one student had a 504 plan. At first, this seemed like a good idea to have all of the students with behavior issues in one class to get it over with, because there were only seven students. As I observed this class more, I realized that was a horrible idea. These were the students that were constantly in the Principals office, or getting a "talking-to" from the security guards.

Teaching and Learning Setting

The classroom seemed to be set up effectively. If a student needed a pencil they knew where to get it from. Same with anything else they would need, because they were all in the same space for them. There was quite a problem with the learning setting due to all of the behavior issues. Mrs. Palma had to constantly redirect the attention back to the lesson she was teaching. The main problem was all of the students would feed of of each others energy. If one student was being disrespectful or disruptive then the other students would laugh and "cheer each other on" as Mrs. Palma said. In the end, very little material was actually learned because of all of the disruptions. I could tell that Mrs. Palma was doing everything in her power to help them learn, but when they would get off task even a little bit, it was hard to get them back on track.

Mrs. Palma did a fabulous job redirecting her students as much as she could. Her other classes that did not have as many 504 plans were much easier to handle, but I was not able to observe those. The most common thing she had to do was give redirection to her students that were off task. Instead of addressing the whole class she would walk around to each individual student to make sure they were on task.

My thoughts about teaching in a classroom that includes special needs learners

I did a mock interview in my public speaking class for a job as a high school teacher. An interview question that I was asked was "What students do you tend to focus on?" My response has stuck with me to this day because it was candid. I said, "I tend to focus on the children who are struggling more to understand something, because I really believe in making sure all of my students are on the same page." I had never thought about that before but that is still true to this day. For right now I still feel called to teach in a general education class, but will possibly seek it in the future. I would love to have special education students integrated into my classroom. It would benefit me as the teacher as well as the special needs student. I think they would feel more "involved" in our school because they are a part of a "normal class."
