The first was when Mildred attempted suicide and Bradbury used the jets to set a deeper mood of suspense and despair. The theme has also showed up at night, when the bombers fly in the sky. Faber mentioned the war and how no one in the society mentions it and remains oblivious to the ugly truths of the war outside of their safe bubbles. A report of the war was given over the radio as Montag walks home and lies about how many soldiers had been "mobilized". They show how the citizens of their city ignore the possibilities of anything negative outside their society. Most of the citizens only care about themselves. The jets also create a sense of tension throughout the poem. The quote about the jet bombers flying every night show how large the war must be and how ignorant the citizens are to it. No one in the society talks about the war or worries about their loved ones fighting, instead they remain oblivious and "happy". This theme of war shows the unstable state of the society and how it's teetering on the edge of destruction. The citizens don't care about the war because it doesn't directly impact their lives and continue to desperately try to obtain happiness.
