The School of English are publishing their anthology of creative writing and have asked MA Viscom students to design a cover. This is a perfect CPP opportunity as it's a real brief from an external source.

The theme is SPARK and this is open to any interpretation you wish to consider. You can incorporate the word Spark, however you should leave sufficient space on the cover for the title and additional text for optional/ alternative design choices.

At this stage we would like to see initial ideas, look at books in Waterstones and WH Smiths to ascertain what you think makes a good book cover. Would hand written type work better than formal type? Should you consider a central image or a cover full of activity?

1. The lines on the cover are too scattered and diffuse, lacking blocky expression and appearing too elemental.

2. The whole style tends to be calm and steady, I think for a theme like ‘spark’, we should try some more lively compositions! Instead of using the same style that I have used in the past.

3. Painting on the iPad lacks some physical experimentation, and the use of watercolour or acrylics might give a better expression to the idea, or a more flat compositional form.

My motivation for doing this book came from my experience of travelling on the Tube in London, where I often made mistakes, so I had the idea of wanting to do a transport guide.

In the story part, I would like to collaborate with my friend to design a female international student character to be more immersive and explain how to travel on the tube in London and the confusing things that can happen.

In the guided section, the design of the book will tally, typeset, and design some of the information into the book as a whole so that the entire book is stylistically unified. The content includes: all the modes of transport in London with illustrations and drawings, signs for different modes of transport, detailed maps of the underground lines and some information about travelling.

I think the problems of our zine are: the content to be expressed on each page is not clear enough, and there is no in-depth refinement in the visual. There was a lack of research on colours, typography, style and it was not applied in practice.

The need to improve the efficiency of communication and collaboration by clarifying the division of labour and responsibilities for each member of the partnership to avoid duplication of effort or unclear responsibilities; and to resolve differences of opinion as soon as possible when they arise.
