The Indian warriors were driven off by artillery fire from the U.S. Navy sloop-of-war Decatur, but it was primarily the Decatur's guns that kept the Indians at a distance. The settlers who still remained tool advantage of the lull to evacuate the women and children to the Decatur and another ship, but they attempted to retrieve arms and valuables from their abandon homes which then the Indians begin to resume firing. Scouts reported the warriors were preparing to light fire to settler dwellings, the Decatur shifted its fore to the homes damaging several. By 10 p.m. all firing had stopped.
