They  had a raised fortification (Motte) and an enclosed courtyard (Bailey) that was surrounded by a defensible ditch.

As you can see the borders of countries have expanded, lessened or the country has completely disappeared. My favourite country from medieval Europe would be the Holy Roman Empire because of its complex society, people and culture.

After/During the 1000 years, the Middle Ages had an alternative name which was fitting for the deeds done during the period and is known as "the Dark Age".

The Middle Ages were called the Dark Ages as Europe evolved into lack of culture and advancement. The term generally has a negative connotation.

The beginning of the "Dark Age" is believed to have started with the fall of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Age, the great civilisation of Rome and Greece had been conquered.
