"If you can influence the leaders, either with or without conscious cooperation, you automatically influence the group which they sway" (49).
This quote sums up the psychology of public relations because it revolves around appealing to the masses. This is one of the main techniques, because it allows for minimal effort, it relies on the leaders to influence their group.

Propaganda and Political Leadership

"The political apathy of the average voter, of which we hear so much, is undoubtably due to the fact that the politician does not know how to meet the conditions of the public mind" (93).
The reason that I chose this quote is that it is a key aspect to this section of the reading, and I also feel that it is still very relatable today. As a person who has political apathy, I can relate to the fact that the reason that I am apathetic is that politicians do not understand the average citizen. In order to appeal to more people, they must use propaganda more successfully.

Women's Activities and Propaganda

"Women's more obvious influence is exerted when they are organized and armed with the weapon of propaganda. So organized and armed they have made their influence felt on city councils, state legislatures, and national congresses, upon executives, upon political campaigns and upon public opinion generally, both local and national" (115).
I found this quote interesting and important because it highlights, 90 years ago, how influential propaganda can be for women's rights. To me, it seems that this tactic hasn't quite been used enough to gain more rights for women, since they are still a huge societal issue today.

Propaganda for Education

"The normal school should provide for the training of the educator to make him realize that his is a two-fold job: education as a teacher and education as a propagandist" (122).
This quote brings up an important point regarding the importance of teachers in spreading propaganda. Teachers, especially those teaching young children have a huge influence on the way that they think. An example of this that I learned of recently is the fact that schools teach that Thanksgiving was a mutual event on both sides of the Colonials and Native Americans, and the children being taught believe it, even though we later learn that this wasn't the entire truth.

"Propaganda can play a part in pointing out what is and what is no beautiful, and business can definitely help this way to raise the level of American culture. In this process propaganda will naturally make use of the authority of group leaders whose taste and opinion are recognized" (142).
This section of the reading touches upon two important factors in my opinion. The first is that propaganda has a major role in creating a sense of beauty, which is still very prevalent in today's society. The second is that group leaders and businesses have the power to decide what is wanted and not wanted in society, which also is still a large factor in today society. I find it interesting that 90 years ago, many of the same ideas are still true surrounding propaganda.
