Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (PSR) passing rate for Sekolah Rendah Puni is only 42% in 2024, and one of the key reasons is that students struggle with multi-step word problems. The 5 Whys technique is to dig deeper into the root cause and propose solutions.

1st Why: Why is the PSR passing rate only 42%?

Because many students are not performing well in the exam, particularly in math.

2nd Why: Why are students not performing well in math?

Because they struggle with multi-step word problems, which are a significant part of the exam.

3rd Why: Why do students struggle with multi-step word problems?

Because they lack problem-solving skills and the ability to break down complex problems into smaller, manageable steps.

Because they may not have been taught effective strategies for solve.

5th Why: Why haven't they been taught effective strategies or had enough practice?

Because the teaching methods may not emphasize problem-solving skills, or teachers may not have the resources or training to teach these skills effectively.

From the result above shows that Science subject drag A-C percentage down to 46.43% if compared to other subject.

Why students only manage to get 50% A-C for Science subject?

Many students having difficulty to understand the question requirements, especially in paper 2.

Why the students don't understand the instructions and the questions?

They have limited vocabulary especially the scientific terms.
