Smoking is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease and CVD is responsible for more than 800 000 deaths per year in the US.

Cholesterol helps your body to produce hormones, build new cells and insulate nerves. The liver is responsible to produce cholesterol but animal based food like milk, meat and eggs also contribute to cholesterol in the body. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood vessels it can cause atherosclerosis. There are two different types of cholesterol - Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) considered "bad" cholesterol and High-density lipoprotein (HDL) considered "good" cholesterol. LDL is the main source that is responsible for artery-clogging plaque.

Maintaining good cholesterol levels:

Diet - Reduce the amount of trans fats, saturated fats and sugars to lower the blood cholesterol level. Eat more plant derived sterols and fiber to help lower LDL cholesterol

Weight & Exercise - Losing weight when overweight can help lower LDL cholesterol levels and increase HDL levels

Medical conditions - Hypothyroidism, liver and kidney disease can sometimes cause elevation of cholesterol levels in blood

Medications - Medicines like, steroids and progestins can cause increase in "bad" cholesterol and decrease in "good" cholesterol

Obesity does not only increase "bad" cholesterol levels but also decrease "good" cholesterol levels. That is why it is important to have a healthy diet and exercise regularly. It can also cause your blood pressure to rise and as previously mentioned, high blood pressure contributes to heart disease. Obese people require more blood to supply their body with oxygen and nutrients which cause the raise in blood pressure. Obesity can lead to diabetes mellitus and people with diabetes are 2-4 times more likely to get heart disease.

Obesity is caused by the following:

- Intake of unhealthy calories/ poor diet
- Lack of physical activity
- Genetics

There are some rare genetic conditions that can cause obesity like Prader-Willi syndrome

- Medical reasons
