Overgrazed and overworked soils make farming difficult and can damage the long-term health of the soil. Farmers use heavy machines that end up causing desertification and erosion. Those two features can cause a drought which can cause farmers not to make any money. In the long run overgrazing and over using crop land could get you one month worths of good crops while just taking care of your land can get you money and food for your life. If you don't even have enough water for your family because you are in a drought then you will most likely not be able to provide enough for your livestock or crops.
