Jordan tells the in-depth story of Daisy's past: Daisy met Gatsby, but couldn't marry him because he wasn't rich enough. When she met Tom, they got marriied, and Daisy thought she loved him, but was still thinking about Gatsby. The day of her wedding to Tom, she got a letter that made her more depressed (and drunk) than she ever had been. We do not have hard evidence that the letter was from Gatsby, but one can infer. In addition, we hear the story of how Tom was already having an affair a week after the wedding. We learn that Gatsby bought the mansion only so that Daisy would be right across the bay.
