Hiram Revels (as shown below) was the first black senator. Sadly though the next black senator was around 100 years later. This shows how much better things got during reconstruction. This also shows how the 15th amendment helped black people more rights and helped them look less like property and more like human beings.

Stupid government, and stupid war, stupid United States of America. I was perfectly fine with being the Confederate States of America where we could have as many slaves as were wanted and do what ever we wanted and no one would bother us but that bullheaded Lincoln had to come and destroy it. I had a good life too, roughly 20 slaves working in my cotton fields, me and my wife holding party's at least once a week. Some of the best wine in the state, but them those idiotic northeners had to came and take all that away. Now I'm living in a hotel while my house gets reclaimed and I had to release all my slaves. I'm glad I was smart enough to sell some of the good ones before the war ended. I at least have a little money. That John guy had a smart idea killing Lincoln but that didnt last long because one of our own became president and he hsa the same ideas and the last one. This hotel is swill compared to what we used to have. The food is almost as bad as what we fed our slaves. Almost. Well as long as its better than what we gave those slaves I guess that is all that matters. Goodnight
Sincerely,
George Ulorbda

Abraham was a great man. It is true that he could be a little pigheaded but that just made him a better friend and president. He had very good and smart ideas about how the country should be run. As a friend he also always knew what to say though sometimes he could let a couple things slip but then again who doesn't. I was quite sad to hear about the assassination, I mean we all knew he was going to die someday, everyone does. We just did not expect him to be killed by that awful man. Either way he was a great man and deserved to live life to the fullest, not to have it cut off abruptly.

Anonymous

Reconstruction as an ultimatum was a failure. It is true that things did get better for black people, but that required the extreme measures of sending in the military. As soon as the military was gone everything went back to being bad for the black people because the sheriffs that agreed with treating them badly were reinstated. Also just because the southern states rejoined the union does not mean they were welcomed with open arms by everyone. Not every southern person wanted to go back either. The government did good for a while but after they gave up everything just went back to treating blacks as close to slavery as they could get and southern people never stopped being bitter in the first place. That is why I believe that, as a whole, reconstruction was a failure.
