On page 23 it states "The man watches him closely. He says, 'I've heard the SS boasting that this is going to be the biggest concentration camp of all.'" This shows the reader that this is about concentration camps during the holocaust. So if the reader is interested in history this could be interesting for them.

On the cover of the book it says "based on the powerful true story of love and survival." This shows the reader that it is a true story, so if the reader finds those books appealing then they might be interested in this one. It also tells you that the characters are going to have romance and have to try to survive.

On page 54 it states" He ran away from home to Berlin and joined the Hitler Youth and then the SS." This is another piece of evidence that shows that this book would be appealing to a person that likes history. And it shows the lives of the Nazis running the concentration camp, so that could be very interesting to some audiences.

There is a prologue at the beggining of the book that repeats itself on page 41, it talks about how he has to tattoo some girls but in the middle of the main character, Lale, tattooing a girl a man comes up and grabs her face. The girl and Lale seem to form a bond in the quick time they are together. It states on page 2 and page 41 "When he has finished, he holds on to her arm for a moment longer than necessary, looking again into her eyes. He forces a small smile. She returns a smaller one. Her eyes, however, dance before him." The prologue allows the reader to realize that this is an important part of the book because it wouldn't be highlighted twice if it meant nothing.

Lale is now untoppable to stop the tears that toll down his emaciated cheeks." This shows the reader that Lale is appreciative of the people who help him and that Lales blockmates are caring people because Lale could've been killed but his friend helped him and kept him is a comfortable state.

Screw up and get me into trouble, and no bag or words will save you.' His hand goes to his pistol, rests on the holester, flicks the catch open. Closed. Open. Closed. His breathing grows deeper. Lale does the smart thing: lowers his eyes and turns away." This shows the reader that Baretski is powerful, ruthless and wont hesitate in killing Lale. And it shows the reader that Lale is intelligent for not saying or doing anything back to Baretski.

He picks himself back up. Baretski slows his walk, seemingly waiting for Leon to catch up. As Leon does, Baretski sticks his leg out, causing him to fall again. Several times more on the journey." This shows the reader that Baretski is cruel because he repeatedly trips Leon knowing he was weak.

The author wrote this in a way that the author can clearly imagine what the building looks like. Along with how the trees are bloomed. And she did a good job of using the word "trudge" instead of walked to allow the reader to imagine what they looked like walking toward the building.

He vows that the next flowers he gives to someone he will pick himself." On page 113 it states "He bends and gently picks the short stem He will find a way to give it to Gita tomorrow." The sentence from page 8 is the vow that he will pick the next flower he gives to a girl and on page 113 he finds a flower to give to Gita, the girl he loves. The author does a good job at occasionally bringing up Lale giving a girl flowers and he often states that girls like flowers. So keeping this a constant in the story makes the book have more flow.

Once again Lale talks about his vow. But in particular, on page 131 he is talking to Gita about the vow he made to himself. It states "'Yes, we do. There will be a tomorrow for us. On the night I arrived here, I made a vow to myself that I would survive this hell. We will survive and make a life where we are free to kiss when we want to.' Gute blushes and turns away." And then on page 250 Lale and Gita find each other after being separated and freed from the camps. It states "Lale sweeps up Gita into his arms and kisses her. One of Guta's friends comes over and leads the horse away. Then, with Gita's arm around Lale's waist and her head resting on his shoulder, they walk away, merging into the crowded street, one young couple among many in a war-ravaged city." The author not only kept mentioning the vow Lale made himself as a staple in his story but she also made it a common staple in his relationship with Gita.

On page 91 it states "'Your size. The Germans are the cruelest bastards ever to live, but they are not entirely stupid. They have a kack for finding the right person for the right job, and I'm sure they will find word for you.' 'What kind of work?' ' don't know. You'll have to wait and see.'" This was when Lale and Jakub first met. Lale told Jakub he will find a job suited for him. And then on page 171 Lale and Jakub meet again under poor circumstances. It states "'My job is to get names from you--names of prisoners who might be planning to escape or resist, and, of course, the names of prisoners who get the money and jewels to you.' Lale looks away. The enormity of what Jakub is saying begins to register. 'Like you, tatowier, I do what I have to do to survive'" and it also states "Oh, Jakub. I never imagined this would be the work they found for you. I'm so sorry." I think the author does a good job of having a lot of character in the story but she reuses them throughout the story and gives them a bigger purpose. She does a good job at introducing people early on and they are a bigger part of the story later on.

In chapter 25 Gita is trying to find a safe house to stay at. On page 215 it states "The sun has gone down, and the weak streetlamps cast little light. They are forced to ask a passerby for help finding the address they have been given. For some reason this reminds me of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:Part 1 movie when Harry and Hermione go to Godric's Hallow and visit Aberforth. The way the street is described in the book reminds me of what the move looks like and they are in a similar situation.

I also like flowers so the author allowed me to make a text to self connection. It reminds me of when my boyfriend gets me flowers and I enjoy them a lot.

On page 64 it states "The next morning, Gita and Dana are the last to leave their block. They exit with their arms linked, talking, oblivious to their surroundings." This is one example to the tight friendship between Gita and Dana. It reminds me of the Little Women musical I was apart of during sophomore year and the Little Women movie that came out a few years ago.

On page 128 it states "Stories had filtered back about the concentration camps." The entire book is about concentration camps which relates back to learning about the Nazi's and what they did to Jews. In particular I remember reading an Anne Frank book in 4th grade and this entire book made me think about that and what they had to go through.
