A man named Odysseus and his crew are on a boat and somehow end up on this island where the deadly nymph calypso lives. They were exploring for a little while and they stumbled across this herd of cattle. They agreed that when their barley runs out they will "cut the noblest of these cattle for sacrifice to the gods". They spent the night on their ship and as they woke up their barley has run out. So as agreed they killed the cattle and sacrificed them. But what they didn't know was that those cattle belonged to the sun god. So the sun god went and complained to Zeus. Zeus then said he would send a lightning bolt to destroy their ship. So during this attack Odysseus manages to grab hold of a piece of his ship large enough to row himself to his next destination. And the tale of the Cattle of the Sun God ends.

Conflict- Conflict is something everyone goes through. It can tear friendships apart, define who you are and even solve an ongoing dilemma.Odysseus had a major conflict with himself internally. In the beginning of our story, Odysseus is wondering at sea trying to find land.He in his struggle had to muster up the courage to pray to the god Zeus "So one day I withdrew to the interior to pray the gods in solitude" (Homer pg.1077). He had to go through conflict to resolve a situation with him and the gods above. He needed to have some internal conflict with himself and be courageous enough to speak to someone with so much more power than him.

Characterization- As diction paints a picture so does Characterization. This Story often describes Odysseus's crew in good ways such as calling them a "gallant crew" (Homer, 930). These descriptions help the reader picture the characters as closely as possible to what the writer is thinking. As I stated before these descriptions are to help the reader in which case we know that the crew is a gallant crew that must mean they are a noble and brave crew.

Diction- The diction of a story allows a story to be more immersive; To paint a picture for the reader. For example, Homer writes, "just as Dawn with fingertips of rose touched the windy world,". That excerpt helps immerse the reader in the world being described. The description of a "white-hot bolt," of lighting from the god Zeus is scary already in how its described. Diction in a story could be everything.

Figurative Language & imagery (Alyanie)- Words are like pictures the author wants to share with the reader. They make the reader see and feel the world around the character whose story you're following. The Odessy has so many big words and it may be hard to find pictures.Yet when there are those words that inspire the imagination it's like a little bulb that goes off. When Odysseus fell into a deep sleep is mischievous shipmates went an slaughtered the cattle of the Sun god "the bones were burnt and tripes shared they spitted the carved meat (Homer pg.1078)"These words can mean a million different things to a million different people .In these few words, I can just picture the dark red meat attached to those blackened bones. With those few words, anyone would be able to use there imagination to picture what the author is trying to convey to the reader.

Hero's go through many trials and tribulations. It's part of their journey to discover who they are and who they will become. Odysseus is going through is own journey finding out who is a friend and who is a foe.Friends can make any hard patch easier to handle, and enemies can the journey a living nightmare Odysseus thought he could trust his shipmates not to do anything to the cattle of the noon god "Here they sat, and a great work they contrived Lampetia in her long gown meanwhile had borne swift word to the Lord of noon" (Homer pg.1079) Odysseus is in agony because he knows the gods will have wrath. The god of noon had no mercy for Odysseus and his men and neither did Zeus who struck them down with a bolt of lightning. Odysseus is now floating in the ocean with no vessel because the people he thought he could trust betrayed him.

In this day and age, people tend to lose respect for one another. We need to be able to trust one another as friends and not foes.Odysseus thought he could trust his friends not to eat the cattle of the sun god and they went and did it anyway.Heros show true characteristics of friendship. They care for those who may have hurt them in the past. They even show characteristics of Jesus.Jesus loved those who hated him and a good hero will love the villain who is out for there throat.Modern-day heroes that reflect these amazing characteristics are people who help with drug and alcohol addiction. For example, the people who are on the drugs might hat the therapist because it's like they can't control the addiction.A therapist will love the one with the addiction because they want the best for the patient.
