He was one of the most famous reformers. Steffans wanted to expose  the government and how it bribed and corrupted others in the country.  "Shame of the Cities"  was put together by multiple articles that Steffans had published in McClure's Magazine in 1904. Dubois was a leading African American sociologist, writer and activist. In 1895, He was the first African American to receive a Ph. D. in the subject of history from Harvard University. Unlike Booker T. Washington, who believed unskilled blacks should focus on bettering themselves economically. He demanded that African Americans should achieve more than just economic parity with whites in the United States but full and immediate civil and political equality as well. He believed in speaking out and not staying silent. He was a direct of advocate for rights. Taft was elected president in 1908, the chosen successor of Theodore Roosevelt, but was defeated for re-election by Woodrow Wilson in 1912 after Roosevelt split the Republican vote by running as a third-party candidate. In 1921, President Warren G. Web Dubois was a man who believed in the equality of everyone. Unlike his counter part, Booker T. Washington, Dubois believed that the the road to recovery was through protest. The African Americans should protest and attempt to get into office and make the laws. The above quote, shows that the poor African man will have a hard time thriving within society. He also stereotypes that all African Americans are poor when during this time there were a few that were successful.
