Big-Chested Beauty

This is a sign that is currently hanging in the main window of the Victoria's Secret at the Carbondale Mall. It is hard to miss, and it draws both men and women in who walk past it. For women, it makes the claim that having a little more lift/a little larger of a chest will go a very long way (in any way you can possibly imagine, whether it be for attracting the opposite sex or just feeling more beautiful than you ever did before). This, of course, could not be further from the truth. Men who read this sign may create a false idea in their minds of what women should look like.

This particular message can also be found at the Carbondale Mall but right outside the American Eagle store. I chose to take a picture of this message because I think it highlights the inappropriate use of a self-worth message. How I read this message was that it takes an attractive, heterosexual couple to most accurately represent who can "give joy" and "get loved". What kind of message is this sending to a homosexual couple that walks by? Or how about an overweight couple? Or even someone who is single and happy with being single? Your self-worth and the amount of joy you can give and love you can get should not be determined by your sexuality, your weight, or your beauty.

Beauty in a Bag

This is a picture of a sign I saw while walking around Ulta makeup store. It stood out to me because it makes it seem like achieving "beautiful" skin is as simple as purchasing this bag of over-priced makeup products and using it on your face. But who is determining what makes someone's skin "beautiful"? All skin types should be praised and uplifted for being beautiful with or without the use of makeup. A person should not feel as if it takes an entire bag of makeup to improve their skin and beauty; this causes a major conflict for an individual's self-worth (feeling pressure from society/our surrounding culture to use makeup and be "beautiful", and if they choose not to do so, their "beauty" may be at risk).
