Are we working off the 5 love languages? If so my WORK love language is acts of service. More than anything I appreciate when a team works together and the perfect work environment is positive one built around trust. Words don't mean a lot to me, I'm an actions speak louder than words person. That being said, when I see people step up, contribute, work together as a team or rise to challenges that makes me feel like "we're in this together" and I appreciate and respect that.

Words of affirmation are important because they add value to what we do, and how we feel. Acknowledgment is the key to making a person feel important.

Much like everyone else, it is nice to hear a genuine complement. Just a simple “thank you” or “ I really appreciate how you….” goes a long way. It doesn’t even have to be very often, just every once in a while to make staff feel seen and not like they are being overlooked or lost in the shuffle of the busy days. Also, being an active listener and showing that you are supportive and willing to provide strategies and brainstorm new ideas.

I can be very critical of myself so when I know I am doing something well, when I know I've done a good job I truly appreciate a thank you. I beat myself up enough so to receive a compliment is wonderful. It's taken me years to accept a compliment well which I think a lot of us aren't able to do yet. The teacher I work with now not only thanks me every day as I leave, he tells me how he thinks we're a great team. That means everything to me.

Just a simple thank you goes a long way! It's not expected daily, as we all have a job to do, but every so often hearing that something has been noticed beyond our four classroom walls is greatly appreciated. It goes a long way to feel that you are a valued member of the school staff. Our classroom team works very well together and we do let each other know that we are thankful for our team, but sometimes it's nice to hear from outside of that. Our days are filled with lots of testing, IEPs, many many groups coming in and out of our classroom, so just to know that we're all in this together and can rely on one another goes a long way.

I’ve been hearing - or maybe I’ve been more conscious hearing - the phrase “ I appreciate you” lately. In my opinion, it’s a more powerful statement than “Thank you” because I feel that it’s genuinely coming from the heart. Even I find it difficult to say it to someone in person with direct eye contact. Receiving this statement makes me feel valued and important.

Another thing of feeling appreciated is when students greet me farewell as they exit the classroom. Often times, they only acknowledge the teacher. I realize it’s unintentional but this simple farewell act makes me feel like a valued individual because they remembered me too. It doesn’t make me feel like an insignificant instructional assistant.

A simple "Thank you" is all I need to feel appreciated. The thank you acknowledges the work or acts I do, while at the same time expresses gratitude from that person. Another way is to possible help me out with tasks without asking if I need help because I will rarely ask for help and I am always willing to help others even at my own detriment.

A "Thank you" is always appreciated -- especially something specific, it shows someone really notices the effort I am making. I think it's also nice, especially for classified staff, for an adult to make sure the kids notice the classified staff and give these thank yous. Often, students will not do this on their own, they need a teacher/parent to guide them. They need help acknowledging the other adults outside of teachers that serve them, too.
