Critical analysis of Chimamanda Adichie 'The Danger Of A Single Story'

Chimamanda Adichie was an immigrant author in United States with her origins in Nigeria. Mrs. Adichie was awarded several prizes for the novels that she published.
'The Danger Of A Single Story' focuses on the central themes of Stereotyping and Identity, similar to Units 6 and 7 in Foun 1101. The stigma following an African person is one of stereotypical nature. The association the history of the 'African man' being inferior and of law class as was common in the enslavement period. In my opinion in each account of Caribbean History, the story from the white's perspective is told.
I agree that according to Mrs. Adichie that a story can break the dignity of someone or repair it. The identity of the Caribbean people were broken when only accounts from the whites were given. However with writers like Chinua Achebe, Olive Senior, Chimamanda Adichie 'African' people are liberated in which there is a new vessel to explore the experiences of Africans through their writings.
I strongly agree with Chimamanda's Adichie's quote that the single story of the Caribbean history created stereotypes for the 'African' generation. Stories should be told from different lens in order to break the power of stereotypes.
Additionally, the issue of gender and education is highlighted. In Unit 7 we examined the topics of Gender, Education and Caribbean Family Life. Mentioned in the video Adichie spoke about her mother's new status in society. With this acknowledgement we recognize the Gender issues where women were often supposed to be somewhat of a housewife doing domestic work. Also the differentiation of classes in which Caribbean Family Life is split between hierarchical structures based on income and standard of living.
'The danger of A Single Story' highlights how we perceive people and even ourselves due to ignorance of differential perspectives of one story stories.

Cricket In the Caribbean.

Being a witness to the myriad of sports practiced in the Caribbean, I always found Cricket to be one of those 'boring' sports. However after learning about the historiographical background of 'Cricket', I developed a renewed perspective and interest towards the sports. During the tutorial we watched a video clip entitled 'Fire In Babylon', this documentary on the history of 'Cricket' enlightened me in ways unimaginable. '
I am now aware of why my grandparents would be glued to the television when The West Indies is playing a game whether it be 'test match or CPL OR ODI'. It's the connection to the roots of our origins as 'Africans struggling to have a voice or freedom from the prejudices of the enslavement period. The whites used it as a vessel to inflict pain and oppress the 'BLACKS' in the Caribbean.
The Caribbean people associate cricket as cultural because it helped formed part of our Caribbean Identity. It connected several regions in which cultures were being shared. I appreciated the sport now more than ever as it was our break through from the stereotypes of the whites.
We leveled the playing field by adopting their strategies. Leveling the playing field is both figurative and literal, as they did not only equalize the sport field but tried to create a feeling of equality. They wanted to establish a sense that they too are human and capable of being as good as their comrades despite the history of their skin color
I look forward to going to cricket matches and even viewing it on television. With a renewed vision that Caribbean people have influenced a different twist to the foreign sport. We introduced our own flavor and style including music as a key factor to it's enjoyment.

Understanding 'Free movement within Caricom' a problem of regional importance.

Issues of regional importance has effects on the Caribbean in it's entirety. To closely discuss the issue of 'Free movement within Caricom,' one must firstly defined the term Caricom. ''The Caribbean Community Market (CARICOM) is an organization of 15 Caribbean nations established in 1973 whose main purposes are to promote economic integration and cooperation among its members, to ensure that the benefits of integration are equitably shared, and to coordinate foreign policy.''
The mobility of factors of production; goods, services, capital and people to freely move across Caribbean Community States created regional and international issues. Including competitiveness, immigration, reduction on embargoes and it generally affected private and public sectors of business. However the aforementioned issues has both advantages and disadvantages alongside other points.
In my opinion I think the Free Movement within Caricom is a good idea to an extent. In which there is free movement in services, goods, capital, people , the trade barriers have been removed in order to accomplish this. Free movement in services lead to requirement of each Member State to remove impediment of one's right to provide services.
For Goods, there are no import duties on goods, tariffs and quantitative restrictions in all Member States are removed. In terms of Capital, citizens will be able to transfer money to another country through bank notes, cheques, electronic transfers, etc. without having to
obtain prior authorization. For the people of Caricom, The Treaty on the CSME abolishes
discrimination on grounds of nationality in all Member
States. Under the CSME, the free movement of persons across the Region.
I believe it is quite beneficial but those improved regulations , can result in an increased rate in competition. Competition can both pose a treat or be of great essence to boost the economies of these Caricom states.

Self-Reflection of the Semester

I was unbelievably mind blown at the vast knowledge of the historiographical background of the Caribbean there was to be learnt. With common knowledge of history learnt from Caribbean Studies and History, I too had developed a 'single story' based on the information learnt.
However, in Foun 1101 their was now an in depth meaning to the simplified concepts like colonialism, imperialism, matrifocality and so forth. Additionally my critical analysis skills have improved alongside my ability to work among my fellow classmates. The plenary online lecture although their isn't any possibility for a face to face class, I would suggest that the technical implications inclusive of audio problems, difficulties logging into the server and the minor distractions that cause students to be easily distracted.
I must add though that i thoroughly enjoyed the cultural aspect where music was used to engage the students. In terms of the contents and knowledge it was executed masterfully in which tutors used technological advancements which specifically appealed to me in which I understood the concepts easily.
This course has given me a renewed vision of my identity as a Caribbean person. I am more appreciative of the struggles that my ancestors went through in order to make the lives of the future generation one of equality, free from prejudice and tortures of enslavement.
Overall the semester's teaching was good for me personally. At times i didn't want the tutorial to end because the knowledge being shared was so rich and interesting to explore.
