<title>On March 29, 1822, the royalists intercepted a letter that María had sent to her husband. Although it was signed “Andrea”, his identity was soon discovered. By order of the Spanish general Carratalá, she was arrested on March 30 in Huamanga and, after being subjected to intense interrogations and torture to make her denounce the patriots, she remained silent. She was shot in the pampa or plaza del Arco in May 1822.</title>
