The play didn't explain what happened between them leaving the house, and arriving at Miep's. Anne, in the play, is very full of life and annoying to some of the people living in the annex. In the film, you could see how her playfulness and liveliness appears to her friends and family out of hiding.

In a written representation, we can read about how they feel and what they do in their lives. It helps you "put a face to their name" and learn what the setting looked like. You get to know what they wore for clothes and what the buildings were like.
