S.E. Hinton develops the theme of friendship through out the story through the use of the characters actions, feelings, and words. The actions of the characters are used to develop the theme by showing how some of the members of the Greaser gang act towards people that are not in the group and how they act to the people inside of the group. For example when Pony was recalling Johnny getting jumped he said, "Dally was there, too, swearing under his breath, and turning away with a sick expression on his face. . . Dally had seen people killed on the streets of New York's West Side. Why did he look sick now?"(pg 32-33) This happened very early in the story and was one of the first things that showed that Dally, despite being a tough mean Greaser, was deeply affected by his relationship with Johnny and the others. Early on in the book Hinton puts many examples of the theme in through the words of the characters. Later on she writes bigger examples that use the characters actions and words like when Johnny kills Bob and when Dally kills himself. S.E. Hinton used the actions, feelings, and dialogue of the characters to show and develop the theme subtly and noticeably.

"You really killed him, huh, Johnny?"
"Yeah." His voice quavered slightly. "I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. . ."(pg 57) Johnny killing Bob is an expression of the theme through his action because Johnny did something that he would never do in any other circumstance all to protect Pony, his very close friend.

When Dally helps Johnny and Ponyboy S.E. Hinton is once again showing the theme through the characters actions by having Dally, who is very tough and mean, help his friends massively when they get into trouble. Dally likes to do things that benefit himself but he helped Pony and Johnny out and even gave them money just to help them.

Johnny and Ponyboy are all alone in an abandoned church out in the country far away from the rest of their gang which caused them to get stressed. Ponyboy sometimes over reacts but he and Johnny were able to quickly calm down once they comforted each other. In this instance the theme was built through the setting and the actions of the characters because they were out in the country with only each other and they had to comfort each other.

For Johnny."(pg 125) When Dally says this he shows that he deeply cares about johnny and their close friendship would cause him to fight in a rumble even though he is hurt and supposed to be in the hospital.
