Ed Kemper grew up in California, where he lived with his mother and father before they divorced. The divorce severely affected his relationship with his father and worsened an already deeply struggling relationship with his mother. Clarnell Elizabeth Kemper, mother to Ed, was reported as abusive and often harassed him being described as domineering and emotionally abusive, this being one of the suspected reasons of Ed's later criminal history.

Ed Kemper was observed as a troubled child early on, as he showed a big interest in death and was very abusive towards animals, particularly cats. This can be considered primary deviance, as when he killed the cats, he would follow up by dismembering and dissecting them. Ed Kemper displayed predominantly negative deviance, going against societal norms and values, such as the above examples. Following these behaviors, Kemper was sent to a mental facility, where he was observed to have made great progress and cleared him of his record, one expert saying "It is my opinion that he has made a very excellent response to the years of treatment and rehabilitation and I would see no psychiatric reason to consider him to be of any danger to himself or to any member of socitiy."

After fleeing his mother and dropping out of school in 10th grade, Ed found himself going to his father, where he found out he had remarried and his step mother did not want Ed. He was then kicked out and given to his grandmother and grandfather. His relationship with them was said to be strained by his phycological issues from his parents separation and mothers abuse. He later murdered his grandma after an argument, saying he wanted to know 'what it felt like to kill somebody.' Later, he shot and killed his grandpa as for him to not discover he killed his wife. This was the first of 10 kills spread between the years 1964-1973.

After he murdered his grandparents, he went back to his mother, where they continued to have a severely strained relationship. He would often get into huge screaming matches with his mother, and afterwards he would then pick up a woman looking to hitchhike, and then kill and dismember her and engage in necrophilia with her body. This behavior repeated on and off for years, Kemper describing the victims as 'substitutes' for his mother, killing as a odd form of venting after his arguments. He later after a particularly nasty argument, bludgeoned his mother to death, dismantling and destroying her body, as he wanted to 'disrespect' her and take out all of his anger. He said he screamed at her decapitated head for hours until he called her friend and killed her as well. After the killing, he fled the state, and when he stopped for gas and overheard the radio talking about the murders, he decided to turn himself in. His legal team tried to argue he was guilty but mentally insane, however this was dismissed due to his previous record at the aforementioned mental facility. He then confessed and was sent to life in prison.

Kemper used killing as a coping mechanism for when he argued with his mother. His victims usually consisted of women who were noted as venerable or looked like they had just been in an argument. For this reason, he would be considered a organized killer as he managed to often maintain control over his victims and gained their trust first while picking them up, making his killings very methodical.

Kemper was somebody who desired control in his life, due to his relationship with his mother being described as emotionally abusive. For this reason it is speculated the main motive of his killing were for power & control. However his killings slowly changed him. He used to be manipulative and cunning, taking pleasure in the kill and the methodical planning process, and having complete control of himself where he did not have that as a kid, and enjoyed having control over his victims. Later on through, he became the opposite. He surrendered himself to the authorities, saying to continue to kill would be a waste of time and energy, and later would plead sane and guilty, even requesting the death penalty.

Kemper never showed signs of attachment, as his strained relationship with any parental figures often prevented him from forming any meaningful connections. Kemper never had a serious relationship with another person or had friends. Thusly, he had no commitments or involvements in life and was a drifter going from place to place and eventually landing back with his mother who abused him constantly and dominated his life. All of this leading to a disconnect to society and little to no belief in the norms and values of his peers.
