         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>The campaign to end the drinking of alcohol in the early 1800s. <br>Why?<br>-Men would spend their money on it<br>-Not enough money left for their family<br><br>How?<br>-Passed around pamphlets urging people to stop drinking<br>-Put on plays to dramatize the effects of alcohol<br>-Temperance speakers traveled to spread their message and asked people to sign a pledge giving up alcohol<br>-Business owners supported this movement because they needed workers who operated machinery to be alert and safe. <br><br>Result<br>-By 1855, 14 states had laws that banned the sale of liquor. <br>-Most of these laws were repealed</strong></div>]]></description>

         <title>Labor Unions </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Labor unions were created in order to fight for workers' rights. <br>In the early 1830s, workers began to organize asking for shorter hours and better pay. The fist labor union started in the Lowell Mills,  1,500 ladies went on strike when the boarding house raised the rent.<br><br>-Other unions asked for things like shorter hours and better wages<br>-Between 1835 and 1836, around 140 strikes took place in the eastern United States. <br>-The Panic of 1837 greatly slowed down strikes and labor unions, workers were afraid to cause trouble because jobs were scarce. </strong></div>]]></description>
