There are also shadowy undertones to show that there is a horror element to the film. This is further supported by the use of a supermarket - it is a typical horror setting however it's not in the middle of the say like it is in SOTD.,

He is also portrayed as a zombie later in the opening sequence this is further reinforces his portrayal as a lazy and disappointing character. This portrayal of Shaun in the start of the film sets him up for the rest of the movie where he proves him self some what better than some of the other character portrayed as more proactive in the beginning of the film like David and Diane.

The first shot we see shows Shaun looking directly at the camera. He has a very vacant expression on his face which makes him look zombie-like. By showing Shaun like this it shows us that even the protagonists are already zombie-like, which makes us wonder weather or not a zombie Apocalypse would actually make much of a difference in this film's world. this adds to the idea that in Shaun of the dead "we are the zombies" as does the fact that the other half of the opening scene goes through multiple shots, showing people doing boring every-day jobs, in a very zombie-like manner, as if they are already drained of life from the normal routine.

All of the settings in Shaun of the dead are all realistic settings, for example the Winchester pub. This makes the whole film feel a lot more realistic in general, which makes the introduction of the zombies more interesting, as we would have originally viewed the film's world as a similar one to our own, in other words one without any zombies. This is shown particularly in the pub scene as you can see and here people doing normal pub activities which would be considered "normal" in both our world and the film's world.

Equilibrium: The equilibrium is established as being a mediocre dull lifestyle, contentious but content- mainly due to the group’s unwillingness to identify Ed as a cause for trouble and civil unrest between the characters; For example, one of Liz’s opening lines is “ It's not that I don't like Ed.” which shows their denial to explicitly expose Ed for what he is and what he does. As a result they are basically living in almost a glasswork fragile world. Furthermore, society is shown to be stuck in a trench of patterns and predictability making them almost undetectable during the dawn of the apocalypse where the same entransed state of mind is shown walking the streets and terrorising the locals, completely nonchalant to Shaun on his morning routine. - Dom

Contextual: Just as Romero has used zombies as an allegory for racism, consumerism, and sociopolitical apathy, Wright uses zombies as a metaphor; rutted and unable to break his dull routine, Shaun is a social zombie. - Dom

The setting is established as very serious through the lighting, and the conversation taking place is very serious. However it is contrasted by Ed interjecting comedically. This sets up the entire film and shows us it is a comedic film with serious messages.
Stan
