The Trolley Problem

We discussed in the previous modules about the trolley problem. Who lives or dies? What reasoning do we use? When we think about self-driving cars and the decisions that will be made for us on who lives or dies. If you are drivin gthe car your split second decision can determine whether someon lives or dies but would you really want it in your cars hands?

My simple answer is no! I would rather drive that be driven. I don't even like to ride with other people needless to say trust my life to a car that might have a sensor fail and crash into someone else. I don't consider myself an old school person I just think that is adopting a huge piece of new technology in my life that hasn't proven itself to anyone. I am sure the day will come when the cars are on the road everywhere and in a crude way "playing god" and pulling the decision out of your hands.

Thanks,
Brandon Boyd

Reading this title I immediately thought of how self driving cars could be exploited to kill people. Killers could hack into the onboard computer and cause the car to wreck into an object, go off a cliff, etc. Besides these issues I would wonder how blame would be assigned in accidents. Would the person that owns the car be responsible even though they were not actually driving or would it be the compute software company that programmed the car. Very interesting dilemma that we may be facing in the near future. Personally I'm with you and I want to be in control. I would be afraid that if something happened the computer may not make the wrong inputs.
