1. History:
The DSM provides a means of common linguistics, and a set of diagnostics for many disorders, for countries worldwide to be able to compare and relate, professionally. The original DSM was published in 1952 and centered on psychoanalytic theory, encompassing around 100 mental disorders. The third addition of the DSM moved towards a set of diagnostics to be monitored. The DSM-IV was considered monumentally revolutionary; it focused on the ways in which disorders typically appear, while leaving space to diagnose individual cases. DSM -5 is quite similar to the DSM - IV; it addresses roughly 400 disorders, while introducing new ones and organizing previously mentioned disorders.

Over the course of time and many versions of the DSM, hundreds of new diagnoses have risen in awareness and become part of a potentially life-changing experience for many individuals. Diagnosis is one of the first steps to treatment. Different diagnoses have also become more applicable due to the immense detail provided to assess clients, rather than categorizing people into boxes based on a vague gauge of characteristics. Now there exists the Mental Status Exam, which examines appearance and behavior, thought process, mood and affect, intellectual functioning, and sensorium.
