Contrasts and Contradictions
Quote(s) - "You wouldn't see anything special about Josiah Linden's house if you passed it on the road... A scrawny oak tree, gnarled and twisted from years of catching the wind off the bay, sat in front, spoiling what symmetry the old house ever had." (page 103)

"The interior of Mr. Linden's home was bright with sunlight that streamed through the starched patterned curtains."

Explanation - This is an example of Contrasts and Contradictions because the description of Mr. Linden's house contradicts what is said about the outside of the house and the interior of the house, as the first quote views it as not "anything special", and the second quote tells that the inside of the house was "bright with sunlight".

" " It's about dolphins." (112 and 113)

Second Explanation: "She looked at the book and then threw it down on her bed, telling herself she will never puck it up again. Now she knew why Mr. Linden read the same book everyday. He had warned her about the book. Now it was to late... Now and again her hand would reach out from under the covers toward the light by the side of her bed. "Don't open the book again," she pleaded with herself. "Please."

Explanation: This shows how Josh Linden died because of the same book Carol wants to read. For Josh it really was to late and it is to be the same for Carol.

Mr. Linden on page 112 says "Yes, I hear it in your voice, child. I hear it clearly. But let me tell you- warn you, even- that there are books like frigates, that carry the mind gloriously across oceans of ideas; and then there are books- a few books, I would say- that capture more of he mind that one would want to surrender, books that are better off never read, never opened."

Explanation: I would have thought that Mr. Linden would just have actually told her what would happen if Carol took that particular book from the library. It would make more sense to tell her what would happen because since she didn't know what would happen if she took it, so she probably wanted to find out why the book changed every day she read the same page and she probably didn't believe him because he didn't tell her why not to take the book and read it. But that's just my thinking and opinion on it.

She opened the book where Mr. Linden had placed the flat bookmark. It was page 201 and continued one short paragraph, which, out of curiosity about Mr.Linden she read.(page 106) Carol picked up the book and opened it to the bookmark. It was still on page 201, but the text now ended farther down the page then she had remembered. (page 108)
Explanation~
It's again and again because Carol sees that Mr.Linden is on the same page multiple times. I believe that the book is changing its story everyday so he just stays on the changing story page. What would happen if she turns the page though?

Carol's request surprised even her." This is a contrast and contradiction because no one really thought that Mr.Linden could read so asking if you could borrow a book, not even knowing if he has any is plain crazy. This is a Contrast and Contradiction because if you do not know something you would not assume and ask to borrow something that people do not think is even there. Especially asking someone you do not know very well.
