In the 1970s, the missing mass that is responsible for the gravity needed to hold the galaxies together was theorized to exist in the form of dark matter.Dark matter accounts for more than quarter of the universe’s mass energy balance, but still has not been directly detected. It continues to be one of the greatest mysteries in physics today.

80 percent of the mass of the universe is made up of material that scientist cannot directly observe. Known as Dark matter , this bizarre ingredient does not emit light or energy. But they think it's made of baryonic or non baryonic. Baryonic matter is composed of protons, neutrons and electrons.

Astronomers looking at spiral galaxies in the 1950s expected to see material in the center moving faster than on the outer edges. but, what they really found is the stars in both locations traveled at the same speed, indicating the galaxies contained more mass than could be seen. Recent discoveries from the AMS unit on the outside of the ISS, in 2013 showed that they have found the most convincing evidence yet that that dark matter exist. Based on the last year and a half in 2013, measurements from the AMS, scientists believe that an observed excess of antimatter particles, or positrons, in the flux of incoming cosmic rays could be produced when two particles of dark matter collide and annihilate. This theory is called supersymmetry.
-This picture show's clusters of dark matter.
