Using the text Malala as a read aloud. We are studying religions of the world. One religion we study is Islam. We are discussing the Taliban, the extreme Muslim terrorist group. After a chapter read, we share out, idea thoughts questions students have. Students then write a brief summary of the chapter.

Mary Anne Roy

Book Trailers

Book trailers are a great way to introduce students to a variety of new books. Creating a lesson around the book trailer invites students to participate in the lesson having gained background knowledge. Using a lesson on story elements teaches students the various parts of a story. Students will be able to identify character, setting, plot, theme, and problem and solution after hearing and reading a story. They may then create their own story and invite readers to join them by creating their own trailer.
Stacy

This course has inspired me to bring out the world of reading, learning, creativity, and knowledge in myself and others. I have placed the box of books in my speech room and have allowed the students to choose a book and read for the last few minutes of the session. The kids have throughly been enjoying the books!! They have even brought books home to keep, and continue to ask me for more books for themselves or to share with their siblings!

In addition, I have also introduced the myriad of ways you can use a picture book. I used Dr. Suess’s cat in the hat with my first graders all the way up to my 5th graders! We used branching up and down strategies to further critical thinking skills, make inferences, target IEP goals, and be creative ! — Pamela Leibowitz

The day the crayons came home is a great book for kids of all ages. After reading the book aloud, students were able to share their favorite part of the book. I found several activities related to the book. We practiced spelling and math with the worksheets that I found. Students also shared on writing their favorite part of the book.
itzel connell

My students were invited to do their readings online through read works.com. I had an outstanding response from my younger students, first period. Unfortunaletly, my fifth period class had very low participation.
I am glad my students are able to test their comprehension skills and go over their mistakes and my comments in an individual way and pace.
Jul

I put all the books that I picked out, in our second session, into a box for the students to access when they finish all their classwork. Many of the students have taken advantage of this opportunity. They start and when it’s time to move on, they write the page number of where they stopped so they can continue next time. Some have even asked to borrow the books for a few days. I also offer extra credit. I have a 3-2-1 chart above the box. On a piece of paper they have to write facts they learned, what they found interesting, and what they would like to know more about. Monica Nealis
