The Olympics games began in Olympia 2,700 years ago.
The games were part of a religious festival.
They were thought to have begun in 776 BC.
They were held in honour of the king of the gods Zeus.
They were held every four years in Olympia like now.
On the first day of the Olympic Games the only event was the short sprint which was running from one end to the stadium to the other.
Other games were added, which included the pentathalon, in the pentathlon the games were, wrestling, boxing, javelin, discus and long jump.
Winners of the Olympic Games were given a wreath of leaves and a heros welcome back home.
Winners had the chance to marry rich women, free meals and invitations to party's. they also got the best seats in the theatre.
The running track was wider than the one with have now! You could fit 20 people on the whole teach in width.
Around 50 000 people could fit in the stadium at once. Most spectators had to find spots to pitch their tents away from the Olympic arena. They had to sleep rough. Important visitors got to sleep in hotel rooms. Most competitors were naked or coated in oil.
The games ended with a feast. Loads of oxen were roasted in a giant Barbeque.
The Olympic stadium was hot and over crowed and the water supply was low but that didn't stop people from coming.
Also, after the Olympic Games traders came to do their businesses and entertains, jugglers and acrobats came to perform. Polititions made speeches to the crowd.
The nastiest events were probably the pankration or the all-in wrestling. In these events there were hardly any rules, like biting and poking people's eyes were banned but this didn't stop people from doing this. Some did both of them.
The wresltling was the most popular too, although boxing was tough too.
The fighters wore leather glothes, a boxer was allowed to hit his opponent even though he'd be knocked to the ground.
Cheating was punished, doing things such as bribing an athlete for instance, had to pay a bronze statue of Zeus as punishment.
Only men boys and unmarried girls were allowed to attend the Olympic Games. Married women, weren't allowed to attend the Olympic Games.
Unmarried women had their own festival at olimpyia every four years. Winners were awarded crowns of sacred olive branches.
These games were hounded of Hera, the wife of Zeus.
As a rule Greek woman you could not go in for sport unless you were spartened.
The Olympic Games were more important than wars because they were a religious festival.
In side the template of Zeus was a huge statue of the king of the gods.
