My name is Synetra Toney, and I am proud to be the counselor at Bedford Heights. My family and I moved to Texas in the summer of 2016 from Omaha, Nebraska. I graduated from Midland Lutheran College, now named Midland University, in Fremont, NE in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. I later earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Prior to my move, I was employed with the Omaha Public Schools for 16 years; 8 yrs. as an elementary teacher and 8 yrs. as a school counselor (elementary & high school).

My husband and I have been married for 18 years, and we have a 9th grade daughter and a son who's in 4th grade. During moments of relaxation, one of my favorite things to do is treat myself to a manicure and pedicure.

As I enter my 22nd year as an educator, I'm reflecting on the previous school year and all of its challenges. Please know that I'm here for you, ready to support and encourage along the way. We truly are better together.

CONFIDENTIALITY

While it is important that a student's conversations with a school counselor be kept confidential, confidentiality does have its limitations. According to the American School Counselor Association's Ethical Standards for School Counselors, counselors must "keep information confidential unless legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed or a breach is required to prevent serious and foreseeable harm to the student."(American School Counselor Association [ASCA], 2010).

The most frequent type of breaches include a student verbalizing the following:

1. Verbal, Physical or Sexual Abuse

2. Neglect

3. A desire to harm him/herself

4. A desire to harm someone else

5. An unreported sexual assault
