Activities with Rigor & Coherence - ARCS

Activities with Rigor & Coherence (ARCS ) allow educators to come together as a community and post a series of lessons and ideas relating to specific mathematical topics. This allows them to share their creative ideas that they have and also look at others' ideas and provide feedback or comments. Each lesson posted, provides different materials that can be used, how to introduce the topic to students, types of assessments that can be conducted and so much more. This resource is a great tool for teachers to have social interactions with others, share their ideas and also learn more that they can do.

Students’ Exploration of Mathematics focuses on connecting different topics of mathematics to real-world situations. By making this type of connection, students can relate more and can engage more in their learning. For example, we can connect sports like baseball and basketball to finding the mean. Another example of this is connecting graphing and analyzing data with traffic in transportation. This resource provides a lot of great information on how educators can do this and what kinds of activities they can do.

Notice and Wonder

Notice and Wonder is a way you can introduce a lesson or topic to students. This provides an opportunity for all students to share their ideas and create a collaborative and supportive classroom environment. It also helps educators the chance to give their students chances to build on their attention and responsive skills as well. Students can respond to each other by making connections, asking questions, or giving back feedback to their peers. It also allows students to understand that math is everywhere around them and can enhance their engagement, curiosity, and self-confidence. One of my previous professors used this in his class and I found it extremely engaging and effective. It helped me and my classmates collaborate with each other better and also open our minds to the subject of mathematics.

Illuminations

Illuminations goal is developed based on the Common Core State Standards and the NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. This resource provides a variety of lessons and interactives that educators can incorporate within their classroom. The lessons provided similar things that ARCS does with how to teach a certain subject, however, one difference about this resource is that it provides objectives and standards which can be extremely helpful. It can be a challenge creating these in our lessons so having this as a tool to help is very beneficial. The interactives allow our students to be more engaged and hands-on learners which I believe is critical for their mathematical experience.

Math Sightings

Math Sightings connects mathematics with the real world and daily life examples within different lessons and stories. Similarly to Student Explorations in Mathematics, it picks real-life events or topics of interest and connects them to a specific mathematical idea. A lot of students, including my younger self, question why we have to learn mathematics and if it even has any relevance to anything. Incorporating math into interests or these daily life events, makes a student’s thinking process go deeper. This resource included a couple of examples of lessons you can do with your students which I thought would be beneficial to use in my future classroom.

Problems of the Week

Problems of the Week is a great way of introducing or reminding students of the mathematical ideas they are working with from previous times. During this, students work on the task that is given and then respond and collaborate on their answers and ideas. From this, students can reflect and expand their thinking. This also provides an assessment that the teacher can base their lessons and activities on what their students are responding and answering with. In a lot of my elementary classes, my teachers would incorporate it at the beginning of their math lessons and I thought I benefitted from them a lot.

I will be definitely be incorporating these different resources within my Field Studies and future classrooms. Each of these provides several unique opportunities for our students to learn mathematics by being interactive, engaged, and supported. As an educator, our end goal for our students is to give them high-quality education and each resource provides different tools for achieving this. I want my future students to understand that math is essential to life and be excited about it. I can not wait to try out these and see what happens!
