WEEK 2- JUNK OBJECTS

What are the materials histories that you are familiar with?

They are constantly around us, paper, sticky tape, icy pole sticks, cardboard, paint. They aren’t just in our classrooms, they are materials that can be seen indoors and outdoors. They make the world what it is, materials are what creates this world that we live in.

Where does the material come from? How was it made? How has it ended up in our classroom?

Recycling, some were distributed to us from other countries then are shipped down to our stores where people purchase these materials. Its ended up in the classrooms from the university purchasing these products/materials from whoever they whole sale from.

How has this material become important in the early childhood classroom? What are its uses? How do you relate to this material? How are children “supposed” to engage with the material? What are the ‘rules’ about this material?

These materials have become important within the early childhood setting as it provides students with loose parts to make meaning out of their space and peers. Its about creating what they are thinking and playing with the materials that they have in-front of them. It uses are to basically allow people to create and decorate what they want. I relate to this material on the sense of allowing myself to be creative, either from a university setting where I have to create project from scratch using junk materials or by simple having a good time with my younger siblings and make fun things. Children can engage with these materials by being exposed to it. So having it all around the classroom can benefit them as it gives them the time/space and efficiency to play and move with these objects around them. There are no rules, but anything sharp and unrealistic for children under the age of 3 shouldn’t be laid out.

WEEK 3- CLAY

How does the clay react when you pick it up?

It becomes heavy being lifted from where it was, very tight and hard in a way.

What stories does it hold? Does it Bring up any memories for you?

Stories that it would hold would probably be where did it come from and how the educator had put it on the ground set out nicely around different elements and colour and the nature side to it. Yes it brings memories from when I was in high school and how every art lesson we had different materials that we needed to create and make meaning of, and clay was on of them and we all had to move it around and from some sort of animal which was great but very difficult.

How does the material feel different to our past inquires?

It feels different because its very hands on and your hands are getting dirty whilst trying to make something out of clay.

Clay is a very different material to work with, unlike paper or junk/loose parts. What properties draw you to the clay?

Basically how its unique and how it ended up in the classroom, compared to loose parts parts etc, where we see them everyday. Clay is very different because we don't necessarily see it around us 24/7. So having the educator bring this in gave us an opportunity to make unique objects out of clay which was great especially by adding other materials onto it.

Take notice of residue on the clay, where has it come from? Does it have a history?

Clay has become important to peoples lives when creating ceramic objects or pottery. It was first discovered or started in east Asia, in both china and Japan in the 14,000 BC.

How does this material differ from that of paper and junk/loose parts?

It differs from how its being set out, for example- paper, junk etc we didn’t really react to much to it- we felt like it wasn’t so unique and would make anything. Yet clay is so much differently compared to them because we can physically make whatever we want with our finger and add different features. It was a great opportunity as future educators to actually get creative so that we understand how children feel when we tell them to make something out of the materials within the classroom.

How do materials link us to everyday life?

Materials link us to everyday life as it sets out the outcomes for which we perceive and make meaning of, these materials are all around us yet we don't really pay attention until its in front of us and are told to create something out of it from scratch.

As mentioned in thinking with materials- Clay makes plenty of demands. When it is fired, for example, it demands extreme care. If it cools to quickly, it is prone to dust”.

(Pacini-Ketchabaw, Kind & Kocher 2016). Therefore we must understand as educators how to use materials wisely and provide the best quality of materials to our students. So that when we allocate specific task for them to take part in either clay or paint we know the right//wrong for them to then complete it correctly.

Pacini-Ketchabaw, V, Kind, S & Kocher, L 2016, Encounters With Materials in Early Childhood Education, Routledge, viewed <https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/vu/detail.action?docID=4649662>.

ISBN: 9781317588573

What does it mean to ‘listen with light?

Listening to light means being aware of our surroundings and how they make sense in the life that we live in. For example we may not “physically” listen to light, but we can feel and move with it. This can be seen when we are driving our car and how lights are important when we look at ur surroundings, light helps us see the road and the signs. Light can also be a form of understanding what we are wanting to do for example- listening to music we listen to the music whilst light is around our screen or dance floor. Light is around us everywhere we go therefore listing to light gives us an insight into the world we live in.

How does light give us opportunity to think with shadow?

Light gives us an opportunity to think with shadow by looking at our own reflection or other important shadows and make meaning out of it , we may not hear light or our shadow but when we look at something then observe we automatically have a thinking process that enables us to emotionally create meaning in our minds and heart. Things can be portrayed in a meaningful manner even though there isn’t a sound in sight.

What do shadow/transparency teach us about light?

It creates reflections of materials and how that can mean something to an individual. Shadow and transparency teach us how light can be very useful when demonstrating materials clearly or adding information onto the projector to see better or present a presentation as a whole.

How might we ‘think with light?

We think with light by seeing our surroundings. When light is around us we make meaning out of it, for example- watching a movie or seeing a presentation and so forth. We are constantly thinking

Where does light come from? What makes light?

Light comes from light globes, it comes from the sunlight around us in the day light. Reflection light, temperature makes light as a whole.

How does light offer us a different way of ‘seeing’ or a different perspective?

Light gives us a different way of seeing and a different perspective by watching how we think and feel? It is all about the surroundings and how our thoughts bring us in different situations. Seeing different objects through light enables us to think differently and wonder different feelings and emotions.

How does light call us to attention?

Light calls us to attention by improving our mood and it stabilises our instincts. Light is basically seen as a wave that goes up down and around. Its about paying attention to what that light brings us and how we can learn and reflect upon it.

What can we see with light?

We can see, materials, objects, people, buildings, cars, houses and so forth. Anything within our surroundings either in the daylight or at night.

How might we generate questions with light?

We may generate questions with light by, asking ourselves why do we need light and why is it important?. This can be answered by we cant live in a dark world every second of our life. Light is very important in our everyday lifestyle. Through the sunlight all the way to the light globes on the street or in buildings that we are in.

WEEK 1 - PAPER

Paper is a simple tool that is used to jot down ideas, thoughts and make meaning of what an individual wants to create.

What the material is capable of? What can the material do?

Paper can play a big part in an individuals life. People use it to write down messages, or plan a big piece of writing and so forth. Paper can be used to draw, paint, cut- paste and be creative. Depending on the age groups it can be used differently, eg- children would use paper to draw and paint fun things. Adults- could be sending out a long message, writing ideas down for an essay or for an important business project. Paper is used all around us and is the old style of writing, wheres now we have laptops and iPads to do things for us.

What the material is incapable of ?

Paper is incapable of being a fast messenger compared to sending out an email or important message through a phone or computer that needs to be seen by another individual, it is more of a slower process.

How the material interacts with you, with other materials?

Paper interacts with me in all sorts of ways, it helps me when I have a lot on my mind and I want to make notes about personal things happening in my life. It helps me draw/paint my imagination away. It also allows me with my writing, to put down ideas and brainstorm before I type. Having paper around different materials makes me happy in a way, because then I can basically create and make meaning out of what I make. And why I chose to create something out of paper, string, paint, pencil and so forth. Paper is the base of being creative. It starts with paper and then the middle process is getting different materials in or around it then finishing it up with the overall decoration/creation.

How these interactions shift in relation to time and space?

These interactions shift in relation to time and space by either working?, exercising?, being on the phone?. Having to be at placement or at university we can expect specific time to be allocated to draw, paint and be creative with different varieties of material around paper, and use up the entire space. But once we part ways from these locations I feel like we tend to seperate ourselves from materials such as paper, coloured pencils, textures, highlighters, paint and so forth.

What are the materials histories that you are familiar with?

Paper’s history is to basically deliver style and be a useful material to the world. From design, to sketching all the way through writing down information/letters.

Where does the material come from? How was it made? How has it ended up in the classroom?

Paper was invented around 100BC in china, under the Han dynasty emperor HO-Ti, who was basically the first to start a paper-making industry. The invention of paper was why china became so successful. Paper comes from factories that are within, North America, Asia, Europe and account for the most of the worlds paper and pulp as a whole. Paper is made in two steps- the cellulose fibres are sources that converts to pulp, then pull is combined with water and so forth to then make its ways to the paper making machine to which is it flattened, dried and cut into sheets or rolls, then it is sent out globally. Since it is made overseas we get our supplies then they go into factories where it is later distributed amongst Australia grounds to which the wholesalers take it and then start selling it around the shopping centres and stores across Victoria/ Australia. Then every company- such as school, office building, police station, hospital, university all get there equipment from different locations and that how we end up with paper- or any other material around us.

How has this material become important in the early childhood classroom? What are its uses? How do you relate to this material? How are children “supposed” to engage with the material? What are the “rules” about this material?

Paper has become important in the early childhood setting as it gives children the opportunity to explore their imagination onto paper, to either create something of paper, or to simple draw/paint. In order to allow paper within the childcare/kindergarten setting allows the children to develop their skills and for the educators to then examine and take observations. Children can learn and engage with paper in multiple ways and it has no rules, because its not dangerous for them to involve in and actually play and be creative with. In relation to paper and why it is so important and why we need it, it is just a material at the end of the day- as mentioned in Bennett, “materials live in the world in multiple ways “Bennett, 2004” as cited in (Pacini-Ketchabaw, 2016)”. It allows us to full understand that all the materials we have around us have meaning and we use them everyday even we don't necessarily think about them.

(Reading)

Pacini-Ketchabaw, V, Kind, S & Kocher, L 2017b, ‘Thinking with materials’, Encounters with materials in early childhood education, Routledge, New York, pp. 1–21, viewed <http://wallaby.vu.edu.au:2048/login?url=https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781315743257/chapters/10.4324/9781315743257-1>.

Light is everywhere around us, we can see it in our everyday life. It gives us sight when we wake up and when we go to sleep. It helps with everyday use of our lifestyle and enables us to see clearly when needed. Its super helpful because once the sun goes down. What will there be? Darkness? no, there will be light. For us to understand light and how it associates with being an educator this method is by using the “pedagogical narration” as it allows children to physically be aware of their surroundings, how light and other materials/encounters can mean something. Using space for children provides them with all the essentials to develop and collaborate together on a class/individual work learning. As elaborated on- (narration, J.
