Use SER for permanent or lasting conditions, like descriptions, what someone does as a job or hobby, personality traits, time, origin, and, yes, relationships (even though as we all know these can be temporary...)

Use ESTAR for a physical position or location, emotional or physical condition (I'm sad, I'm ill), or an action.

• to express a deadline or specific time
• to express a contrast
• for a soon-to-be-completed action.
