The teacher (caucasion) looks as though she is taking notes on the conversation that is taking place with all of her students.
2. Her students are all African American, so this is possible this photo was taken during or near the end of segregation in which there were separate schools for each race. 
3.The female students have taken positions closer to the teacher and the males have chosen positions much further away.
