In The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton theme is developed by setting , characters, and plot through out the text by revolving the story around the loss of innocence and how events can change that. In the novel theme is developed using setting by the emphasis on the sunrise and sunset and how the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay relates. The sun is like a person, the sun rises beautifully representing the hope youthfulness and innocence of something golden. The sun then sets back into the horizon where it came from representing the loss of innocence as experienced by Ponyboy. The poem helps connects the two ideas because your youthful age is something that can never stay. Along with the setting charcters helped portray the theme. The way characters were portrayed in helped develop the idea of loss of innocence through out the story. Theme is introduced by the interactions Johnny and Ponyboy had. In Johnny's last breath he told Ponyboy "stay gold." Johnny refrences the Robert Frost poem they talked about at the church. In this moment Pony realizez that he cant stay young and innocent forever. The boys will eventually grow up and mature, but Johnny want them to know that he wants them to over come these obstacles and learn from them in a positive way, instead of letting tradgys take over. The author uses plot to portray the theme by having pony boy having an interesting interaction with a few Socs, "I mean it" I hopped off the car. "I've had about all I can take from you guys." I started toward them, holding the bottle the way Tim Shepard holds a switch--- out and away from myself, in a loose but firm hold. I guess they knew I meant business, because they got into their car and drove off." After all the experiences Ponyboy had finally lost his innocence, he had let it get the worst of him. Pony had lost two very close friends and let his emotion take over. We are able to see this beacsue earlier he said he would never use a bottle to hurt someone. But in this part he was ready to hurt them. Along with his change in personaliity he lost his passion for school. The loss of innocence in Ponyboy was caused by all the experiences he went through through out the novel, his negative reactions causesd many other things. Setting, charcters, and plot helped develop the theme by emphasizing the idea of the loss of innocence.
