Social studies will include vocabulary lessons for discipline-specific words uncommonly used elsewhere. Each subject (e.g. geography, economics) within the discipline would have their own list. The approved textbooks will also have vocabulary to develop for that given subject.

Vocabulary in social studies regularly features prefixes and suffixes (morphemes) for students to identify meaning of words.

In addition to vocabulary, storytelling would be a commonly used practice to develop the oral language proficiency. Oral tradition through storytelling is how history was first recorded, so it fits naturally within the social studies context. (Pragmatics)

Eventually as the student develops, social studies will focus on ideas and concepts (e.g. democracy, government) to further extend the oral language skills.

Oral presentations are common in social studies classrooms and also develop oral language skills.

English is the melting pot of languages, just like America is the melting pot of many cultures. Therefore, the studies of phonics and vocabulary, and learning to decode more advanced words in a 6-12 classroom will undoubtedly lead to learning other cultures. Because of this melting pot phenomenon, students will encounter words one is unfamiliar with especially in the history classroom. Being able to successfully teach phonics will be important for these moments.

Social studies 6-12 can also support phonics, but on a more embedded basis. As students learn more vocabulary and become more familiar with phonics of words and their origin, they can begin to decode new words of the similar root language based on that context. For example, teaching about laissez-faire borrowed from French, may be able to help a reader decode rendezvous based on the shared 'ez' syllable. The same is true with encoding.

However, it is a symptom and it often is likely to appear to be implicated in poor comprehension.
Slow reading is a symptom, not a malady.
Instead of trying to teach students to read faster, it is essential to make certain that they are able to decode easily and continuously, and to maintain their concentration.

Writing is a vital component to every classroom, but especially Social Studies. Without writing the discipline would be drastically different. Exploring past writings is a common activity that students will do which will help develop their own writing skills.

A large part of Social Studies writing is evidence-based arguments. Students of social studies often read a source, pull data from that source, and respond to a prompt supporting one side.

Social studies classroom can scaffold the student’s learning of writing by including different writing activities such as journals, essays, storytelling, and creative writing.

The social studies classroom can also break the writing process apart and scaffold individual components. In group activities students can revise a historical account, or translate it from historical English to modern-day English.

Writing in social studies can include multiple forms as well. Students can write narratives, expository essays, persuasive arguments, and simple research articles.
