Focus groups are interviews with six to ten people at the same time. They can be a very quick and fairly inexpensive way of sounding out peopleʼs attitudes and views. An interviewer poses questions and creates a discussion between the group of participants. The data from the discussion is recorded by a note-taker.

Focus groups can help reveal what people really think and feel about any aspect of health and social care, generate ideas for new services and help you gauge reactions to any planned changes in services. They can reveal the diversity and range of views among different client groups, help to find what minority groups think and give a voice to people who don't usually participate or get heard. They can help you design good survey questions and to understand your survey findings properly. They can also be used to discuss sensitive subjects.
