Enjoying rhymes with is one of the few remaining opportunities for little children to engage in an exclusively listening activity. This activity also allows children develop a working knowledge of the way in which speech is made up of segments of sound.

This resource offers beginning readers to review vowel families and practice differentiating between "short" vowels and "long" vowels. It allows readers to identify words with specific long and short vowel sounds. Plenty of images are used to reinforce word meaning. Students are introduced to numerous ways a vowel sound can be made.
There are five short vowels and five long vowels. Short vowels in the middle of words are harder to distinguish in words such as “bit, bet, bat”. Long vowels often have the same sound as their name, “bite, beat, aid”.

Syllables are the easiest segments in speech to detect. Young children who have not yet encountered print can indicate the syllabic structure of words by nodding and beating out the rhythm of words. Interesting findings from studies of people who do not have a written language confirm that they also find syllable tasks relatively easy (Alegria and Morais, 1991).

This resource offers non-readers to spontaneously segment syllables into onset (any consonant sounds which precede the vowel) and rime the portion that includes the vowel sound and any consonants following it.

This resource offers pre-readers to have fun counting syllables. It also helps them become aware of the syllables or “beats” in words from one syllable word like “cat” to four syllable word like “umbrella”. Syllabification helps children identify larger words they may be afraid to try to pronounce without knowing how to break the word up into its smaller units. It also allows children to become familiar with repetitive patterns in the English language that comprise syllables, for example, prefixes and suffixes such as “sion, able” and “pre”.

This resource offers learners to practise the skill of counting the number of sounds in words. Some students, especially those with a weakness in phonological processes, such as syllable reduction, stopping, cluster reduction, and final consonant deletion, will benefit from this activity. This product is also perfect for students with dyslexia, since it is a visual and kinesthetic activity.

Counting phonemes is a part of phonemic awareness which is a specific term that focuses on small units of sound that affect meaning. It exists as abstract and manipulable components of spoken language. It is a small but important part of learning to read and write. (Hill, 2006)

This resource offers children to become aware of rhymes which means they understand that the terminal sounds of words that agree, or rhyme. Many children enjoy chanting raps and jingles and noticing the words that rhyme. Research suggests that knowledge of the rhyme in traditional nursery rhymes is related to the development of more abstract phonological skills and emergent reading abilities. Children will enjoy this activity as they sing along to the catchy tunes and do the actions. This is an innovative way for educators to teach children about blends. This relates to the reading concept and is supported by Pacquette and Rieg (2008) who mentioned that songs are a captivating technique that develop children’s literacy skills in a more meaningful and enjoyable way. This will also be beneficial for non-English speaking learners as they engage in learning through play.
