Several groups were involved in appointing the new caliph. Among these were the Muhajirun, Ansar, Egyptians, Kufans and Basrites.

There were 3 candidates. Ali, Talhah and Al-Zubayr. 

The groups offered Ali the position of caliph, but he refused it suggesting to be a counsellor instead of a chief.

Similarly Talhah and Al-Zubayr also refused to take up the position.

To break the deadlock, Muslims gathered Al-Masjid An-Nabawi (The Prophet's Mosque) to appoint a caliph.
